Fry's electronics has a couple things going for it. First, if you are a tinkerer and an electronics enthusiast as I am, it's one of the few places you can just drive to and grab a resistor, integrated circuit, etc without having to mail order and wait for it to arrive. Also, they use a checkout system that makes sense. One central line feeds all the registers, so everyone gets through the line at an equal pace. Unfortunately for me that's where the good ends. Le'ts dive in: - Their staff, overall, seems to care nothing for customers at all. I do not have any unrealistic expectations of customer service. I don't expect to be bowed down to, I do not expect exceptions to policies to be made for myself. However I do expect overall pleasant demeanor, and it's nice to feel at least like they care about you and what you need. You can expect none of that there. The staff doesn't care if you live or die. - Their security policies are centered around a seeming belief that all customers are trying to steal and defraud the store. Their return policy is draconian, convoluted, slow, and laden with caveats and loopholes that the store uses to cheat you out of accepting a return. They station a staff member at the door at all times to paw through your bag at the exit. Every time. Again, I understand the need for loss prevention. But the overall atmosphere of me being presumed to be a piece of garbage shoplifter irritates me. - Anyone who needs anything more elaborate than a simple take, buy, leave is going to cause themselves and everyone standing behind them pain. I waited, as the next customer in line, at the register line for 22 minutes the other day (or rather... 22 minutes after I started watching the clock...) because the guy in front of me at the register wanted a $5 price match on a $200 item and they had to make everyone wait while they called the competing store to get the store to go to the floor and verify the price. REALLY? GIVE THIS GUY THE $5 DISCOUNT AND BE DONE WITH IT. Or, if you can't do that, open another register. Or pull the guy off to the side and deal with that separately so the cashier can ring others up in the meantime. - Their sales staff are the most rude, arrogant jerks I've ever met. Here's just one incident: A year ago, the lamp in my TV went out. I've replaced this lamp before, and I knew the Panasonic part number for the lamp. I checked Fry's site, they showed they had it. So I went in, and found out that the lamps are not out on the floor, they keep them in the back. So I told the guy what I wanted. He asked me what the TV model number was. I told him I didn't know that, but I have the lamp part number. He refused, absolutely refused, to sell me the lamp until I gave him the TV model number. Why? "Because lamps are non-returnable and you might get the wrong one." Well, that's my problem if I get the wrong one, I told him. Still refused. I don't shop here anymore. I'll order things I need online if I can't get them locally and pay shipping rather than give this troupe of terror any more of my money. Here's some advice, Fry's: - Stop treating the customers as disposable and replaceable. - Stop presuming every customer that walks in the door to be a shoplifter. - Stop presuming every customer that returns something to be someone trying to defraud you. - Stop presuming every customer to be an idiot. I know this may shock you, but high school aged sales kids don't know everything either.
